Patented Naval Technology Advances Offshore Oil & Gas Production
Curtiss-Wright-EMD has been designing and manufacturing critical application pumps since the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, was built in 1952. Today, our unique, patented marine pump and motor designs continue to set the standard for performance and reliability and have led to product innovations in the commercial markets.
Curtiss-Wright, in partnership with Petrobras, Brazil’s international energy company, and Leistritz Corporation, a manufacturer of specialized positive displacement pumps, developed a state-of-the-art submerged, canned electric motor and multi-phase pumping system for deep-sea oil recovery. Subsea multiphase pumping systems enable and optimize production of the growing number of deepwater reservoirs being developed in the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Brazil and other parts of the world. In addition to providing the power needed to lift oil from the reservoir to the platform, Curtiss-Wright’s pumping system also creates the potential to accelerate the oil production rate by as much as 50%, providing a dramatic increase in return on investment for our customers. Curtiss-Wright’s first system is being deployed by Petrobras in the Campos Basin’s Marlim Field offshore Brazil at a water depth of 640 m (2,100 ft).
In 2006, Curtiss-Wright formed a joint venture with Cameron International Corporation to market and supply subsea multiphase pumping systems to the international offshore oil industry. The joint venture combines the motor and pumping system expertise of Curtiss-Wright with the subsea systems integration experience of Cameron, a world leader in the supply of subsea equipment.
This is only one of a number of products that Curtiss-Wright-EMD is developing for commercial and military applications that use the reliable canned motor technology.
