Within the defense market, Curtiss-Wright has a long-standing history of providing the most advanced technology available to naval, aerospace and ground defense programs. Our products manage the flow of liquids on nuclear-powered submarines, control the lift, flight and landing of aircraft, and stabilize the weapons system on armored tanks. Our metal treatment services enhance the performance of critical jet engine and aircraft structural components.
Curtiss-Wright’s primary advantage in the defense market is our portfolio of highly engineered, critical performance technologies which provide outstanding performance from design to production. This translates into high customer confidence in our ability to continue to provide solutions that meet our customer’s unique requirements and adhere to the most rigorous performance testing available. As a result, we have established customer relationships which have achieved generations of successful programs.
Navy
For over 50 years Curtiss-Wright has supplied sophisticated products and services to the U.S. Navy with emphasis on nuclear propulsion systems. Our innovative, high-performance products can be found aboard every nuclear submarine and aircraft carrier commissioned by the U.S. Navy. Sales to the U.S. Navy are primarily sole source procurements of valves, pumps and controls used in the ship’s nuclear reactor. Since 2000, we have expanded our non-nuclear content with product innovations for various ship classes, including smart, leakless valves used in jet fuel pumping stations (JP-5 valves), advanced arresting gear (AAG) for tailhook-equiped aircraft, and a state-of-the art electric propulsion motor designs. In addition, our electromagnetic technology designs have won development contracts for the U.S. Navy’s DDG-1000 and the U.S. Army’s EM Gun programs.
On worldwide naval fleets, our Recovery, Assist, Secure and Traverse (RAST) and Aircraft Ship Integrated Secure and Traverse (ASIST) Systems provides the advanced technology that enables the safe launch, recovery and maneuvering of ship-borne helicopters, especially in adverse weather up to sea state 5.
We provide customized cable handling systems for variable depth sonar handling systems, towed line array handling systems for surface and submarine application, torpedo decoy handling systems and lightweight dipping sonar winches.
We have supplied more than 200 telescopic hangars and 400 hangar doors to navies and coast guards around the world. They can be designed for low radar cross section and can withstand severe shock waves and blast overpressure.
Aerospace
For over 77 years, Curtiss-Wright has provided mission-critical components and subsystem on key programs for the U.S. Air Force. Today we supply systems for nearly every fighter aircraft program in the sky, as well as the latest advances in integrated electronics and embedded computing for unmanned aerial vehicles, such as the Global Hawk. Key programs include:
- F-22 Raptor is the U.S. Air Force’s premier next-generation air fighter with unprecedented fighter and attack capabilities from its balanced design of stealth, supercruise speed and extreme agility. The F-22 aircraft gains much of its stealth capability from its streamlined shape and by storing its weapons internally rather than on external wing pods. As the weapons bay doors open and close, the aircraft’s stealth effect is compromised. Curtiss-Wright’s actuation systems open and close the main and side weapons bay doors in the blink of an eye, thereby maximizing mission effectiveness and pilot safety. Curtiss-Wright also supplies the entire leading-edge flap actuation and drive systems for the F-22 program.
- F-35 Lightning II Program (also known as the Joint Strike Fighter Program) is the Department of Defense's focal point for defining affordable next generation strike aircraft weapon systems for the Navy, Air Force, Marines, and our allies. The advanced design airframe, autonomic logistics, avionics, propulsion systems, stealth, and firepower will ensure that the F-35 is the most affordable, lethal, supportable and survivable aircraft ever to be used by so many warfighters across the globe. Curtiss-Wright provides actuation equipment for the Ordnance Hoist System (OHS) and Ordnance Quick Latch System (OQLS), as well as embedded computing and sensor electronics.
- The U.S. Air Force’s Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to provide military field commanders with high-resolution photographs of large geographic areas. The Global Hawk’s flight control, sensors, mission operations and navigation are managed by two Curtiss-Wright Integrated Main Mission Management Computers that act essentially as the brain of the aircraft. The speed, reliability and accuracy of the computers allow the Global Hawk to fly for over 30 hours at altitudes greater than 50,000 feet and land on the centerline of its destination runway, all without human intervention. The advanced technological capabilities of the Global Hawk system will significantly enhance the U.S. military’s ability to succeed in all types of operations, from sensitive peace-keeping to full-scale combat.
Ground
For armored vehicles, we provide sophisticated electronic upgrades as well as aiming, stabilization and suspension systems to current forces, such as the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, the Abrams Tank, the Stryker Mobile Gun System and the PIZARRO Armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle used by the Spanish Army. On military helicopters we provide embedded computing technology insertions, such as the advanced Radar Warning Receiver Systems and Air Data Computers, which are enabling fleetwide electronic warfare today.
